Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
On 23 June 2017, the German automotive supplier Mahle announced it will cut some 100 jobs by the end of 2018 at its site in Markgröningen, Germany. The company manufactures small motor components for hand-held machinery, for which demand has fallen in recent years. Mahle's parts for combustion engines are also less in demand as vehicle manufacturers increasingly require components for electric vehicles.
Mahle must avoid compulsory redundancies due to a dismissal protection until 2019. A social plan stipulates early retirement, partial retirement and severance payments. In case these measures are not sufficient, a transfer agency may be set up that could run for up to 3 years.
As of June 2017, Mahle's affected small motor component manufacturing department counts 220 employees. Overall, the site in Markgröningen has 590 staff members.
