Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
People Care, a call centre operator located in Collesalvetti, is to close and dismiss 448 workers.
The decision is attributed to the termination of its only contract for the provision of services to yellow pages Seat Pagine Gialle, due to occur at the end of May 2015.
Most iaffected workers are directly employed with open-ended contracts, while about 100 call centre operators are hired through a temporary employment agency.
Unions are taking part in negotiations, involving also local and national authorities. There is hope that the company will be sold to new investors and Seat Pagine Gialle may extend the service contract by six months.
Update, 24/06/2015: The call centre will be acquired by a competitor, Comdata. About 170 workers will keep their job and continue operating for Seat Pagine Gialle, that agreed to continue the service contract. Comdata also underwrote to relocate about 70 workers in its site of La Spezia.
