Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Boehringer Ingelheim Italia, the Italian subsidiary of the pharmaceutical Boehringer Ingelheim group, announced 176 dismissals at its site in Milan.
The management explained the turnover of its ‘Prescription Medicine’ Division has been shrinking also due to restrictions on public incentives to the purchase of pharmaceutical products and to the expiry of the patent protection of some products.
The exits will affect about 30% of the workforce employed at the site. The mother company already disclosed the intention to implement further cuts over the 2016-2020 period.
Unions deemed the decision dramatic as the group already closed an Italian plant in 2012. Unions lamented the management is not available to discuss a strategic plan for the Italian site and, as a result, they announced strikes.
