Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Call centre operator Globe Network announced the closure of its site in L’Aquila and the dismissals of its 234 workers.
The decision is attributed to the withdrawal by the IT company H3G of the only service contract on which the Globe Network site was working. H3G explained that the discontinuation of the service contract is due to the negative financial conditions of Globe Network, which is under insolvency proceeding and accrued about €4 million debts towards the Tax Agency.
Starting from the date of interruption of the contract, 30 June 2016, Globe Network suspended its activities. The company also filed an appeal against the decision of H3G at the Tribunal of Milan.
Workers are organising strikes and web-campaigns to gain attention on the case. Unions are taking part in negotiations and asked H3G to guarantee employment for redundant workers.
Update, 08/08/2016: The Tribunal of Milan confirmed the legitimacy of the interruption of the service contract between H3G and Globe Network. Subsequently H3G contracted the call centre service to a new company, Customer 2 Care, that agreed with unions to hire back all the workers previously employed by Globe Network.
