European Restructuring Monitor (ERM)
The restructuring events database contains factsheets with data on large-scale restructuring events reported in the principal national media and company websites in each EU Member State. This database was created in 2002.
Alitalia Maintenance Systems (Ams), a company providing aircraft maintenance services, is to dismiss the 237 workers employed at its factory in Fiumicino (Rome).
The company, formerly a branch of Alitalia, is undergoing an insolvency proceeding following the long-standing crisis of the Italian national airline (see AlitaliaIT-2012, AlitaliaIT-2010, AlitaliaIT-2009), and the consequent reduction of orders.
The dismissals would affect high-skilled blue-collar workers and white-collar workers, who are currently receving temporary unemployment benefits.
Talks are ongoing with investors interested in purchasing the company, which could potentially lead to the relaunch of the activities and a reduction of exits.
Unions complained that Alitalia and its new mother company, Etihad Airways, are deliberately outsourcing the reparation of their fleets to new providers, notwithstanding AMS is capable to deliver the same services with high quality standards and for a cheaper price.
Update, 15/04/2016: The company has been declared bankrupt and negotiations with potential investors have eventually failed. Subsequently, all the AMS staff is to be dismissed. Further attempts to sell and relaunch the factory will be made over the coming months.
