Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
The Dutch Chamber of Commerce, or Kamer van Koophandel, has announced that it expects to cut between 200 and 300 full time jobs over the period 2017 to 2019 because of further digitalisation of its services. The job cuts will fall mainly among back office administrative and front office desk workers. Redundant workers will receive support through the already existing mobility centre to find alternative employment elsewhere. The mobility centre was set up in 2014 to support the workers losing their jobs in the previous large-scale restructuring effort started in 2013 necessitated by budget cuts of €80 million imposed by the Ministry of Economic Affairs. The Kamer van Koophandel has 19 offices spread across the Netherlands to support businesses, but has been increasing its online services over the past years.
