Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
The company Mediterránea de Catering, specialised in providing food catering services, has dismissed 127 workers who were providing their services in the framework of the contract with the hospital Complejo Hospitalario de Navarra. Workers have been dismissed once the regional government of Navarra has approved to reintegrate food services provided in the public hospitals within the public administration staff. These services were privatised by the previous government. The measures is being however controversial, as Mediterránea de Catering considers those 127 workers as surrogate staff who should rely on the regional administration. As a result, they are not formally dismissed yet and are not entitled to unemployment benefits. The situation of the workers is being currently discussed in the regional parliament of Navarra.
