Description

The French subsidiary of Linde Group, a world leading gases and engineering company with almost 60,000 employees working in around 100 countries worldwide, has announced 140 job reductions in France, on a total workforce of 744 employees. The group Linde is currently in a process of merging with the US company Praxair. According to the reorganisation plan announced on 17 May to its Central works' council, 6 of its 12 sites in France will be closed. The units of Rennes, Bordeaux, Nice, Sète and Nancy will be closed and half of the employees of the site at Berre where 50 people are employed, will be dismissed. 40 positions will be cut in the sales and support functions and geographical mobility will also be proposed.

The unions estimated that the decision is directly related to the merger to make Linde more attractive to Praxair shareholders and they organised a strike from 19 to 23 May. According to CFDT, the strike has been suspended as the management announced the redrafting of the reorganisation to maintain the sites of Rennes and Berre. A negotiation on the reorganisation and the employment security plan will start on 13 June with unions. The first departures may be expected after three months of negotiation.
