European Restructuring Monitor (ERM)
The restructuring events database contains factsheets with data on large-scale restructuring events reported in the principal national media and company websites in each EU Member State. This database was created in 2002.
The University of Manchester has announced plans to cut 171 from its total headcount of approximately 12,000 staff. Cuts are being sought in biology, medicine, health, business and humanities departments and will affect both academic and support staff. The university has refuted claims by the University and College Union (UCU) that the job cuts are a consequence of the decision of the UK to leave the EU. A spokesperson for the university said that the cuts were part of a cost saving exercise which was consistent with a longer term strategy for growth. UCU pointed to the fact that the university still has a considerable operating surplus; the union plans further meetings to resist the proposed changes. The university has commented that it hopes to avoid the need for compulsory redundancies and will be opening up a voluntary leaving scheme.
