Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Drinks company Diageo has confirmed that it intends to cut 105 jobs from two of its plants in Scotland. Following a review of its business, 70 jobs will be lost from the Leven site in Fife, and 35 jobs will be cut from operations at the Shieldhall unit near Glasgow. Currently the two sites employ a total of 1,300 workers. The GMB union has claimed that the job losses are the result of uncertainty in the UK economy emanating from the vote to leave the EU. Reports suggest that some of the jobs will be relocated to other parts of the business, in Italy and in the USA. A period of consultation over these job losses is now underway.
