Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Bombardier, a Canadian multinational aerospace and railway transportation producer, has announced the dismissal of 160 employees at its Belgian facility in Bruges. The facility will no longer host the entire production process but will instead specialise in the final assembly and testing of railway carriages. The remainder of the production tasks will be relocated to facilities in other countries with France and the Czech Republic indicated as likely destinations in press reporting. In total 90 blue collar workers and 70 white collar workers will be let go by the reorganisation. Trade union representatives indicate that the intent to reorganise the company has been known for several months. Concrete plans were however unknown, which led to great uncertainty amongst employees.
