Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
On 21 April 2017, food producer Homann, a subsidiary of the food company Theo Müller, announced a restructuring programme which includes the closure of four sites in Germany in 2020. Some 1,000 jobs are affected by this step.
The affected sites are located in Dissen, Lintorf (both Lower Saxony), Bottrop (North Rhine Westphalia) and Floh-Seligenthal (Thuringia). The aim of the restructuring programme is to unite the company's production at one place. Although 40 different places all over Europe are to be discussed, the management is in favour of the Saxonian Leppersdorf, where the company is already producing dairy products.
The company will offer all affected employees the possibility to change to the new production site. Theo Müller is investing €500 million in the restructuring programme.
Europe-wide operating Homann currently employs about 3,000 staff members. Overall, the Theo Müller Group employs about 27,000 staff.
