Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
On 4 April 2017, Swedish energy company Vattenfall announced to cut 200 jobs in its services department. Affected are 120 jobs in Berlin and a further 80 in Hamburg. The aim of this measure is to decrease costs by outsourcing these services. The company did not specify a timeline for the restructuring measure.
Vattenfall wants to implement these job cuts as socially acceptable as possible and will avoid compulsory redundancies. Instead Vattenfall announced to use partial retirement, not filling vacancies and severance payment.
The United Services Union already organised a demonstration. Vattenfall currently employs 4,100 in Berlin and about 7,000 staff across Germany.
