Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Bakkavor Group, the UK-based food manufacturer has started the 45-day compulsory negotiation period with 300 employees at Welcome Foods in Huthwaite, Nottinghamshire, England. Welcome Foods, which produces mainly sauces and flavourings, is set to be closed at the end of the consultations. Bakkavor’s spokesperson has stated that Welcome Foods is ‘no longer commercially viable’ (BBC News) and production will be relocated to the Group’s other sites in the UK. Steve Syson, the regional officer of the trade union Unite, said that during the negotiations the trade union wnats to explore the reasons for the site's closure and alternative employment options for the affected staff.
