Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
The Social Insurance Institution of Finland, Kela, is to hire 300 new employees to work with income support. The Finnish municipalities have previously been in charge of the payment of income support, but Kela took over the responsibility at the beginning of 2017, which led to an expansion of the authority. Kela hired 750 new employees at the end of 2016 in order to cope with the additional work, but additional employees are needed to handle the application and payment process. Queues for customer service support and for receiving a decision and payment of income support have been long, signifying a need for additional resources. Kela anticipates that more and more applications for income support will be filed through the online applications system, which will decrease the work load of the income support unit in the future.
