Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Tesco, Britain’s largest retailer, has announced the loss of 1,700 deputy manager jobs in its ‘Tesco Express’ branches and started the formal consultation period with the affected employees. Their jobs will be replaced by newly created ‘shift leader’ positions, which will be paid at a lower rate. According to the company, deputy managers will be offered the option to take the new shift leader positions, redeployment in other stores or redundancy payments. As 3,300 ‘shift leader’ positions are being created, the management claims there will be an overall increase in the number of jobs at Tesco. Pauline Foulkes of the Usdaw union said they are supporting staff with the consultation process.
In January 2017, Tesco announced a restructuring of its distribution network, and the company's latest announcement follows only weeks after the supermarket chain Waitrose announced removing the role of department manager across its stores.
