Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Local Bavarian newspaper Nordbayerischer Kurier announced to cut 50 out of 255 jobs in Bayreuth by mid-2017. Affected are jobs in administration, pre-print and editing as well as further branch offices.
Since June 2016, the newspaper is a subsidiary of Südwestdeutsche Medienholding (SWMH).
The announcement had first been made in December 2016 but at this time the number of job cuts was not specified. In February 2017 already two rounds of negotiations between the works’ council, the United Services Union and the management of SWMH and the Nordbayerischer Kurier had taken place. According to the chairman of the works’ council, management insists on the 50 job cuts. Furthermore, due to the unsuccessful negotiations the United Services Union undertook a full day warning strike. Further negotiations are planned for the end of March.
The newspaper has a daily circulation of around 40,000 copies.
