Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Carrefour Italia, the local subsidiary of French retailer Carrefour, is to dismiss 500 employees across 32 sites in Italy.
Carrefour Italia operates 56 hypermarkets in 18 Italian regions. According to the company, dismissals are due to decreased turnover, increase of labour costs and declining sales in hypermarkets. The plan entails also the closure of the stores in Borgomanero and Trofarello in Piedmont and Pontecagnano in Campania.
A mobilisation of workers was organised by unions, with a strike held on 27-28 January. Unions pointed to the fact that only a few months ago the company had announced an increase of 2.2% in sales compared to 2015.
Update 22/04/2017: The company agreed with unions to implement dismissals only on a voluntary and incentivised basis and to avoid closures of stores by changing them into discount stores. The parties will meet again over the next two months in order to monitor the actual number of workers accepting voluntary departure. In the absence of any further indications of job losses, we have updated the original announced 500 announced job losses to zero.
