Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
HP Inc is to close its inkjet cartridge manufacturing site in Leixlip, Co Kildare, with the loss of up to 500 jobs. Due to restructuring within the HP company, the manufacturing plant in Leixlip has been signalled for closure. The company has employed people at the site since 1995. HP Inc managing director said the closure is not because the plant was not competitive but rather was to consolidate manufacturing to fewer sites in order to achieve operational and organisational efficiencies - the Co Kildare plant is a small site within the company. The company says it is "focusing its efforts on supporting [affected employees] and identifying opportunities for them and providing a programme to help them prepare for the transition ahead" (RTE).
In 2015, HP was divided into two separate businesses, HP Inc and Hewlett-Packard Enterprise. HP Inc is the manufacturing side of the operation while Hewlett Packard Enterprise works in cloud computing and business transformation.
