Description
Sky Italia, the division of UK-based satellite TV broadcaster Sky, announced some 200 redundancies in Rome and Milan.
The company rolled out a plan aimed at saving costs in order to face the increasing competition from web-based media platforms, like Netflix. The job cuts will affect mainly employees from the offices in Rome (120) and, to a lesser extent, those employed in Milan (80). They will involve mainly staff employed in facility management, finance and quality assurance departments.
The company also plans to move its news channel from Rome to Milan and relocate about 300 employees from Rome and 10 from Sestu (Cagliari) to the Milan headquarters.
Workers are holding assemblies and planned four days of strike. Unions are worried about the impact of the decisions and called for national and local governments to take part in the negotiations with the management.
