Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
The Pizza Factory in Nottingham is reported to be cutting 280 jobs, equating to more than one-third of its workforce. The owner, 2 Sisters Food Group, had announced in August 2016 that production jobs were potentially at risk following the loss of a major contract with Tesco supermarket; in January 2017 the company also lost a contract to supply Aldi supermarkets. According to the Unite union, 280 employees are due to be made redundant on 27 January 2017, and the remaining workforce will be moved onto inferior terms and conditions from 29 January. Unite had tabled an alternative plan to redundancy, which sought to protect jobs through spreading the current work across the workforce, but management rejected this plan. Unite continues to press the company for enhanced pay for staff made redundant.
