Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
The management of the regional newspaper La Voix du Nord has announced a restructuring plan that will lead to 178 job cuts on a total of 714 full-time equivalent employees. The regional daily newspaper belongs to the Belgian media group Rossel.
An extraordinary works council has been held on 10 January to present a first draft of the employment safeguard plan. This plan would run for two years, until December 2018. It would involve voluntary departures, age measures for those over 55, and proposals for reemployment in the group. About 55 positions of journalists out of a total of 343 would be cut. About 200 employees have demonstrated on 18 January at the front of the headquarter to protest against the plan. A delegation of union representatives has been received by the ministry of Labour on 19 January.
According to management, the turnover of the daily newspaper has decreased of about 18% from 2013 to 2016. From July 2015 to July 2016 the newspaper sales have decreased of about 4.6%
