Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Imperial Tobacco has confirmed that it has started consultation with employer representatives over a proposed cut of 100 jobs from its headquarters. The Bristol-based site currently employs 500 workers, and is thus intending to cut twenty per cent of jobs. A spokesperson for Imperial Tobacco commented that the jobs cuts were necessary in order to maintain competitiveness and to ensure the future of the business. Further restructuring is also planned at sites in Russia and France. Final information on the number pf job cuts will be known after the conclusion of the consultation process.
