Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Swedish nuclear power producer OKG AB has initiated employer-employee negotiations aiming to cut 280 jobs over the next three years. The reason for the redundancies is the close of the first and second reactor (O1 and O2) at the nuclear power plant in Oskarshamn. Only one reactor will remain after O1 and O2 have been discontinued. The company had hoped that the closure of the reactors could be managed without lay offs, but 280 employees will be made redundant according to new information. Redundancies will be carried out primarily during 2017 and 2018.
Updated, 19/05/2017OKG has revised the number of direct dismissals to be carried out during 2017. Initially OKG planned to lay off 200 workers during 2017, 200 jobs will still be cut although only 84 individuals will be directly dismissed. The remaining 116 jobs have and will be cut through pension agreements and other volunteer job reduction measures.
