Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
The call centre Extel has announced its intention of implementing an employment adjustment affecting that may affect 355 workers (12% of its entire workforce). More than a half of the dismissals (205) will be concentrated at the company's offices located in La Coruña (Galicia). The remaining dismissals will affect the offices of Zaragoza (104), Alcobendas (29), Hospitalet (13) and Málaga (4). The company explains that the measure is justified due to productive reasons, mainly derived from the decision taken from its main client, Movistar, of reducing the amount of work contracted out. The trade unions reject the measure proposed and have called for a strike to demand the withdrawal of the dismissals.
