Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Longford-based manufacturer Cameron Ireland is to close its plant by mid-2017, with the loss of 170 jobs. Cameron Ireland makes flow equipment for the oil and gas industry. About 50 of its staff in the research and development wing of the company are expected to be retained. However, the majority of its staff will lose their jobs if the decision to end manufacturing, assembly and testing activity goes ahead. The reason for the dismissals is attributed to the ongoing crisis in the oil and gas industry.
The company is now engaging with worker representatives during the obligatory consultation phase.
