Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
On 29 September 2016, German dairy company Deutsches Milchkontor announced to cut 250 jobs by 2017. The company cooperates with more than 8,300 active dairy farmers in Germany and produces a wide range of dairy products. Deutsches Milchkontor will reduce their sales and administrative staff due to the dairy market crisis with an oversupply of milk leading to low milk prices all over Europe. Therefore the turnover of the company decreased from €5.3 billionin 2014 to €4.6 billion in 2015.
The affected sites are Bremen, Everswinkel and Zeven. Everswinkel will be affected with a partial operations closure and a loss of 120 jobs. Deutsches Milchkontor employs 7,500 people across 26 sites in Germany.
