Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
The closure of the head office in Alkmaar (West Netherlands) of the Dutch publisher of regional and local newspapers Holland Media Combinatie, part of the national media group TMG, will result in 75 job losses. The closure, announced by anonymous sources, is part of a reorganisation of TMG which includes merging the head offices of TMG and HMC in Amsterdam, leading to job losses among white-collar editorial and advertisement sales staff. This reduction of staff follows earlier reductions of 115 staff in 2015 and another 40 in 2016. HMC was created in several subsequent mergers by TMG of local and regional newspaper and advertisement publishers. TMG is a large Dutch media group with national and regional newspapers, a range of periodicals, and a number of national radio stations.
