Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
The British-Danish international provider of security services G4S is cutting 150 of its 950 jobs in its Aviation Services department active in passenger security control at the main Dutch airport Schiphol (Greater Amsterdam area). The reorganisation is due to the introduction of centralised passenger security control in June 2016, requiring fewer personnel. G4S has announced it will make efforts to re-place staff in other G4S activities or outside of G4S, but does not rule out forced redundancies. The largest Dutch trade union FNV has stated that the news came rather as a surprise to the employees. As of 5 September 2016, negotiations with the unions are taking place to negotiate a social plan for persons losing their jobs. G4S is the leading provider of security services in the world, employing some 6,500 persons in the Netherlands and 620,000 persons worldwide.
