Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
The loss of 106 jobs in telephone fund raising agency Pell & Bales has occurred after the company was placed into liquidation. The company employed 20 full-time employees and a further 86 employees who were on zero-hours contracts. Employees have been advised to lodge claims to the firm handling the insolvency for any outstanding wages and other entitlements, including payment for their last month of work. The job losses occur less than two months after the company was sold by outsourcing firm Parsec. Mid-way through 2014 the company was the subject of scrutiny after treatment of the elderly and vulnerable was the subject of a UK television programme and subsequent newspaper articles.
