Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
It has been announced that 600 jobs are to be cut from the Post Office's cash handling operations. The cuts come after Government funding for the business has been reduced from 210 million GBP per year to 80 million GBP. Further reductions are reported to be expected. The reduction in funding means that nine of the twenty-four cash handling depots are due to close by April 2017. The sites in Preston, Stoke, Hull, Edinburgh, Inverness, Poole, Eastbourne and Dartford, as well as a coin operation at Merlin House in Birmingham are the ones which are earmarked for closure. The Unite and CWU trade unions who represent postal workers have been highly critical of the plans to cut funding and to reduce services.
