Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Mondelez, an American multinational confectionery, food and beverage producer, has announced 57 layoffs at their facility in Mechelen. The decision to dismiss a sizeable amount of people serves the purpose of simplifying the production process, increase standardisation, make room for investments in the long run and improve overall competitiveness. Other branches are being affected by the cutbacks as well, however in a less severe ways. The restructuring measures should be finalised by May 2017. Almost all of the layoffs are located within the administrative departments.
Unions are gathering information about the more concrete impact of the measures and are preparing for discussions with the employer.
In several other countries significant redundancies are being prepared as well: for example, in France, a total of 278 employees will be dismissed.
