Description
Zumtobel, Austrian manufacturer of lighting technology, will close its German site in Usingen by the end of August 2016. Hence, 156 jobs will be cut. According to the company, this closure has become necessary due to low utilisation, high indirect production costs and marginal strategic relevance of the production site while the continuation of the site would not be an economically feasible alternative. A few months ago Zumtobel was in search of a partner, however, this search was not successful. In the course of the closure, the company will take the product portfolio of medical supply unit out of the market. Floor lamps and pendant luminaire will be produced in Dornbirn (Austria) and Lemgo (Germany) instead.
Executive board and employee representatives are currently negotiating the terms of the restructuring. According to the management, job cuts should be carried out as socially acceptable as possible.
Zumtobel already cut jobs in Lemgo in March 2015 (see 03.2015) and shut down production sites in Sweden, Switzerland and China. Furthermore the company sold its branches in Innsbruck (Austria) and Auckland (New Zealand). Headquartered in Dornbirn (Austria), Zumtobel currently employs 5,302 employees worldwide.
