Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
On 16 March 2016, Terex MHPS, producer of industrial mobile cranes, announced plans to cut some 160 jobs throughout Germany. According to the company, job cuts are due to the issues of global demand. Cost savings will affect plants in Wetter, Uslar, Düsseldorf and Würzburg. According to the management, redundancies will enhance the company's efficiency as well as its delivery time.
Employee representatives have been complaining about a lack of alternatives to these dismissals as well as an unfair course of action taken by the company. Terex MHPS (formerly Demag Cranes AG), headquartered in Düsseldorf, currently employs 5,711 employees.
