Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
The British sporting goods retailer JD Sports has notified the Dutch trade unions that only 1000 out of 2500 former employees of the Dutch sporting goods retailers Perry Sport and Aktiesport (both part of the Unlimited Sports Group, USG), have been offered continued employment. The Dutch USG was acquired by JD Sports after it went bankrupt in February 2016. The 1000 remaining employees appear to be mainly young persons working in retail locations all over the country, and have been offered temporary contracts through the Dutch temporary work agency Randstad. This implies that the jobs lost are among the relatively older workers and those working at the former head office, although an unnamed number of head office workers have been kept on. One of the main Dutch trade unions, CNV, has responded with disappointment, considering the optimism that had followed the acquisition in March and the announcement by USG that most of the employment would be saved. The largest Dutch trade union FNV, which has received numerous complaints, is investigating the possibilities for a legal case for age discrimination.
