Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Italian menswear couture company Brioni is to dismiss 139 workers, mainly at its factory in Penne (Pescara). The other affected sites are located in Abruzzo (Montebello di Bertona, Civitella Casanova) and in Lombardy (Curno).
The dismissals are attributed to a structural surplus in production. The negative trend in sales started in 2009, when Brioni implemented voluntary dismissals. In 2012, the company was acquired by Kering, a French holding. The ongoing crisis led to the activation of the extraordinary wages guarantee fund in 2014.
The Brioni crisis was repeatedly object of parliamentary questions to the Ministry of Labour and Ministry of Economic Development, emphasising its serious impact for the Abruzzo region.
During the last months, after an initial announcement of 400 exits, Brioni workers protested at the headquarters of the Abruzzo region, urging cooperation with the government.
The following negotiations, involving unions and regional authorities, led to an agreement entailing 139 exits on a voluntary basis. Workers will have to disclose their availability to leave the company by the 30 April. Redundant employees will be entitled to an incentive of about € 30,000.
