Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
German meat processor Westfleisch announced to close down its site in Paderborn. Some 400 employees will be made redundant. The closure became necessary after the site burned down in February 2016. The company does not expect to reopen the site before 2019 and thus needs to reduce the head count in a socially acceptable manner including a job exchange programme helping affected employee to find new jobs. Financial incentives to leave the company are also offered. Management, works council and the union are currently negotiating a social plan.
