Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
German SGL, manufacturer of graphite electrodes, announced to close its site in Griesheim. A total of 150 employees will be affected by this step. Workers will be offered severance pay as well as the option of being placed in a transfer agency from 1 May 2016 onwards. Job placement and qualification services will be available at the agency which forms part of the result of negotiations between management and works council. Whilst production in Griesheim will be shut down at the end of April 2016, the site will be fully closed at the end of 2016. According to SGL the closure is necessary due to its difficult market situation.
