Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Food manufacturing company Greggs has announced it will close three of its twelve bakeries which will result in the loss of 355 jobs. The bakeries are located in Edinburgh in Scotland, Twickenham in southwest London and Sleaford in Lincolnshire. Greggs is head-quartered in Newcastle in the north of England. The restructure is part of a wider five-year plan to shift the business from selling traditional goods such as sandwiches, sausage rolls and pastries towards a healthier range of ‘food on the go’ such as soups and salads. The company currently has around 1,700 retail shops across the United Kingdom but plans to increase the number of retail shops to 2,000.
UPDATE 09/05/2016: Following the conclusion of the formal consultation process, Greggs has confirmed that the closure of the Sleaford site is underway (as of May 2016). The Twickenham site is due to close in the fourth quarter of 2016, and the factory in Edinburgh will cease production some time in the second quarter of 2017.
