Canadian- owned aerospace company Bombardier has announced plans to reduce its workforce in Northern Ireland by 1,000 jobs. Some 580 of the jobs will be abolished during 2016, of which 380 of the jobs were temporary and contractors. A further 500 job reductions are planned for 2017. Overall, the reduction equates to around one-fifth of Bombardier’s workforce in Northern Ireland and is part of a broader reduction of 7,500 jobs across Bombardier globally across the next two years (see related coverage). Bombardier employs over 5,000 workers in Northern Ireland making it the largest manufacturing employer in Northern Ireland. The job cuts are expected to affect many more jobs in the manufacturing supply chain. In 2015, the company put a proposal to its workforce in Northern Ireland that would have seen the workers accept pay cuts and other changes to their working arrangements. The proposal was rejected in a ballot of union members.
Bombardier builds the wings and fuselages of C Series jets in Northern Ireland. The production of the wings for the C Series was Northern Ireland’s biggest ever inward investment programme, worth £520 million (approx. €658 million). Between 2002 and 2015, Bombardier received £75 million (approx. €95 million) in assistance from the Northern Ireland government, including £21 million (approx. €26.6 million) for the C Series jet. The company also received a £660 million (approx. €835 million) bailout from the Quebec regional government during 2015.
Updated, 27/10/2016; Bombardier has announced that it plans to bring forward the proposed job losses at its Belfast operations. Initially it had planned to reduce jobs by 580 in 2016 and by another 500 later in 2017. It is now understood that the losses will take effect 'within the next few months', significantly shortening the original two year timeframe.
