The army barracks at Zutendaal is to be re-used as a depot for heavy American army equipment. The decision will create an extra 200 to 250 civilian jobs, mainly mechanics, security officers and maintenance staff. The objective is that NATO will be able to react promptly in case of eventual Russian aggression in Eastern Europe. Originally, the Zutendaal army barracks was a NATO-base used by the American army as a depot and reserve airbase. In 2000, the base was transferred to the Belgian army. Currently, the base is to a large extent empty and is only used for the storage of Belgian army archives and the elimination of surplus ammunition.
