Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Meat processing company Tulip has announced plans to cut 430 jobs from its site at Bodmin, Cornwall. The company which is part of the Danish Crown Group, the largest pork producer in Europe, announced that it has entered into the collective consultation process, which is mandated by UK employment law. The proposals include moving bacon production to the Bodmin site and cooked meats to other (non-specified) sites in the UK. Even accounting for bacon production the proposals are for a reduction of 430 staff. The loss of the jobs will hit the local area hard as the factory is the town's largest single employer, accounting for over 800 jobs. The anticipated time-scale for the job losses has not been reported.
