Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Outsourcing company Serco is reported to be cutting 290 jobs from its call centre in Bolton, Manchester. The move follows a reduction in the number of cases that the company will handle from the Department for Work and Pensions. The company currently employs a total of around 1,000 staff at the Bolton site. It is understood that the job cuts will affect 190 permanent staff and 100 temporary workers. Serco has said that it hopes that redeployment and allowing vacancies to be left unfilled will account for some of the job reductions. It is understood that the permanent jobs are to end by the end of March 2016. There is no information on when the temporary jobs are due to close.
