Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Caterpillar, the American owned company which manufactures construction and mining machinery and engines has announced that it is to cut 100 jobs from its operations in Northern Ireland. The job losses will come from its sites in Larne and Monkstown. It is understood that 50 of the positions will be full time, with the remaining 50 losses coming from agency workers. In a statement the company attributed the cuts to key weaknesses in some markets for its products. Falling commodity prices have affected the company's customers in the key sectors of mining and energy. It is not known when the job losses will take effect.
