Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Michelin Italiana, the Italian subsidiary of the tyre manufacturer Michelin, announced 578 dismissals at its sites in Fossano (Cuneo) (400), Alessandria (Turin) (30), Turin (120), Tribano (Padua) (28).
The group employs 4,300 workers in Italy, of whom 1,640 at the affected sites. The dismissals are the result of the company's reorganisation plan, which entails a rationalisation of production, and the closure of the logistics centre in Tribano by June 2016 and of the plant in Fossano by the end of 2016. The group intends to purchase from external suppliers the semi-finished products currently produced at higher costs in Fossano.
The management is committed to implementing effective negotiations with unions and consider relocation opportunities for the redundant workers.
The unions started workers' mobilisation and issued strikes at the various sites. According to the unions, the reorganisation plan should be discussed with a view to avoiding closures and dismissals.
Update 3/12/2015: Michelin reached an agreement with the unions on the redundancies. According to the agreement 362 workers will be relocated to other plants of the company, namely Alexandria (15), Cuneo (235), Turin (85), and other plants abroad (30). The remainder 216 redundant workers will be offered incentives to early retirement or self-employment over a period spanning from 2016 to 2020.
