Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Coal production and distribution company Hargreaves is being reported to be in the process of cutting 150 jobs. This follows the announcement of the closure of the Teesside based steelworks SSI, and is seen to be a direct knock-on effect of the closure. The Durham based company employs approximately 2,500 staff across the UK. There had been initial reports that Hargreaves would take over the running of the SSI steelworks, but the company confirmed that while it would like to support SSI, it did not have any plans to purchase the company. Hargreaves had warned in August that the current conditions faced by the UK steel industry made job losses likely.
