Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Beerenberg, a company working with maintenance services for the oil- and gas industry, is reducing its staff by 250 employees. The company's employees are mainly located in Bergen and Stavanger, as well as offshore. The restructuring will affect several locations. Beerenberg cut its staff by 150 in 2014, as previously reported. The difficult market situation in the wake of falling crude prices and reduced investment is heavily affecting the Norwegian petroleum sector. Despite record earnings last year, new cuts are seen as "absolutely necessary to adapt to the market we operate in" according to Ole Klemsdal, Vice President of Communications.
The company's management has been in dialogue with the unions previous to the announcement. Union representative Christian Jørgensen states that it is sad and difficult to lose 250 co-workers, but report that the dialogue with the employer has been satisfactory.
