Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Oil company Bilfinger Industrial Services is reported to be in the process of cutting 170 jobs at the Sullom Voe oil terminal on Shetland. The decision follows a sharp fall in the price of oil and Bilfinger's approach has been mirrored by other companies operating in the sector. Sullom Voe terminal is also experiencing additional hardship as oil which had previously been processed at the terminal is now being directed to Rotterdam which has better technical capability. Bilfinger has confirmed that a consultation is underway for the 170 affected jobs, though it is not known when this will conclude and the first dismissals will take effect.
