Description
Eggborough Power Station in North Yorkshire is facing closure with the loss of 240 jobs. The company has entered into formal consultation with the workforce with the closure anticipated for March 2016. The decision to close the coal-fired station comes after similar announcements elsewhere in the country, with the 'Carbon Tax' introduced in 2013 considered to be a major factor. The Yorkshire area has also seen the closure of its remaining deep mines Hatfield colliery closed in July and Kellingley is to close before Christmas 2015. The closures of the coal-fired stations have led to calls for the government to examine its energy policies in order to prevent future shortfalls.
