Description
Swedish manufacturer of domestic appliances, Electrolux, is closing its plant in Mariestad, Sweden. All 250 employees will be affected by the closure as the production moves to Hungary.
The move to Hungary will commence during third quarter of 2016. The plant in Mariestad mainly manufactures refrigerators.
The motivation behind the delocalisation is that the production cost per unit has become too high at the Mariestad site. Site manager said that production costs are approximately five times higher in Sweden compared to Hungary.
The President of the Swedish Metalworkers' Union (IF Metall) stated that the union had tried presenting different alternatives in negotiations with Electrolux and that he is very disappointed with the outcome.
Electrolux employs a total of 60,000 workers in over 150 countries. For previous cases of restructuring at Electrolux's Swedish sites, please see the following factsheets: 2012, 2010, 2009a, 2009b, 2008, 2006 and 2004.
